Social Engineering: From Attack to Protection
Chris Hadnagy, Chief Human Hacker, Social-Engineer, LLC

The four main vectors of social engineering – phishing, vishing, smshing and impersonation – are used against information security professionals and their companies every day. Is it possible to use those very same vectors to protect, train and educate your staff? This keynote address explains how the very methods used by attackers can also become your strongest protection against them.

Biomedical Device Security: Is There Hope, or Is Someone Going to Die?
Tracey K. Hughes, Sr. Director of Clinical Engineering, Duke University Health System
Nina Alli, Cybersecurity Researcher, Biohacking Village at DEF CON
Chuck Kesler, Former CISO, Duke University Health System

As networked biomedical devices are increasingly critical to patient care, they are also notoriously insecure. Similar in nature to the problems seen with IoT, biomedical devices can be difficult to lock down, maintain, and monitor. Vendors struggle to provide operating system and software library patches in a timely fashion, and if the patient decides to apply patches on their own, they risk causing the device to malfunction.

Is there hope for securing these devices and protecting patient safety? Join Tracey Hughes and Chuck Kesler from Duke Health and cybersecurity researcher Nina Alli, as they discuss the types of problems that most frequently lead to biomedical device vulnerabilities as well as current and emerging solutions that address the types of issues affecting a wide spectrum of IoT devices.

Session highlights include:

Building Virtual Wireless Security Labs
Presented by: Adam Welle and Eric Azebu, Software Engineering Institute, Carnegie Mellon University

Most wireless security training courses are performed using physical wireless devices that must be purchased by instructors or learners. However, it is possible to conduct wireless security training in a virtual environment without the need for cumbersome physical wireless devices. Cyber security training courses that do not utilize wireless networks are typically trained completely within virtual environments. Wireless security training courses should be no different. In this lab attendees will learn how to leverage the mac80211_hwsim driver to create a Linux-based virtual wireless lab environment. Attendees will create virtual wireless devices and network them together inside of a virtual machine using standard access point and client software. The attendees will use various tools to survey and monitor wireless networks before carrying out several wireless attacks inside of this secure virtual training environment.

  • Create virtualized wireless networks without external hardware
  • Monitor and gather information about wireless networks
  • Perform wireless attacks in a secure virtual environment
  • Gain experience with popular wireless attack tools

Cyber Maturity for Businesses: From Survival to Empowerment
Presented by: Tony Sager, Center for Internet Security

  • How cyberdefense maturity and business maturity go hand-in-hand, and are both essential to the success of a modern enterprise
  • How Enterprises are struggling to integrate the complex risks and dependencies of modern technology into enterprise-level risk decision-making
  • How the CIS Controls help an Enterprise focus on, and make progress against, the most important attacks and risks that enterprises face
  • Broader business decision challenges, and how the CIS Controls are being used to address risk across a wide range of issues like metrics, auditing, insurance, and supply chain assessment

The listed features represent just a few of the highlights of the highly interactive and topical program. For more information on the conference, its detailed agenda as well as logistics, please visit: https://infosecworld.misti.com.

MIS Training Institute Wraps-Up the Most Successful InfoSec World Conference Thus Far

With More Than 900 Attendees, 115 speakers and 71 sessions InfoSec World 2018 offered learning, networking and fun!

SOUTHBOUROUGH, Mass., April 12, 2018 – InfoSec World 2018 Conference and Expo, hosted by the MIS Training institute (MISTI) was the biggest and the most successful event since it first started over 20 years ago. As the longest running conference dedicated to the business of information security, InfoSec World 2018 attracted over 900 attendees, 115 expert speakers and more than 80 sponsors and exhibitors. The main conference ran from March 19-21 at Disney's Contemporary Resort, Lake Buena Vista, Florida. The event also included several hands-on pre- and post- conference workshops and focused summits.

“InfoSec World brings together all different levels of employees, from CISOs to Systems Administrators,” said Joelle Faucher, Sales and Marketing Administrator, CorreLog – an InfoSec World 2018 sponsor. “This gives you the ability to discuss what each of their interests are from a security point of view, and that is very valuable.”

Among the sessions presented at InfoSec World 2018, there were a few that really stood out the most to the crowd. Heavily attended sessions include:

  • No File Required: The Emergence of the Fileless Attacks: The session was presented Giovanni Vigna, University of California Santa Barbara, and addressed the rise in fileless malware outbreaks and posed questions such as: What if there is no Flash file on the wire? What if the Shellcode does not load additional malware?
  • What and Where is the “Dark Web,” Anyway?: This was the most highly anticipated session of InfoSec World 2018. Presented by Rachael Lucas and Connie Mastovich of Reclamere, attendees got a tour of the dark web, complete with a demonstration of how anonymity is assured for those using it.
  • The New Era of Cyber-Threats: The Shift to Self-Learning, Self-Defending Networks: With the number of cyber threats organizations must face on a daily (even hourly) basis, it’s no wonder that this talk, presented by Cameron Armstrong-Peeler of Darktrace, was jam-packed. Armstrong-Peeler discussed how and why legacy rules- and signature-based tools are inadequate in today’s environments, how IoT stretches even today’s ever-shifting endpoints, and how security teams struggle to keep up with fast-moving threats.

Other session topics included the evolution of phishing, attack patterns in the enterprise, headline-grabbing compromises, among several others. Whether attendees were new to the infosec community or veterans with more than 20 years of experience, there were sessions to meet everyone’s needs.

“This was my first time attending InfoSec World, and I wasn’t sure what to expect,” said one of the attendees - Matt Michalek who is an Information Security Manager at Accertify. “I was very happy with both the variety of content and the great location. InfoSec World 2018 provided sessions that were relevant to information security and forensics, but also unusual to the normal conferences like this.”

Among the various presentations was a plethora of networking opportunities. Attendees participated in Living Security Escape Rooms, a Beer Crawl, and the Rise ‘n Shine Breakfasts to connect with like-minded peers and had fun while doing so. New this year, InfoSec World also hosted the Pros Vs. Joes Capture the Flag which saw participation from first-timers to hacking experts. The new addition allowed infosec professionals from across the nation to work as teams and compete.

“InfoSec World 2018 was a truly extraordinary event,” said Katherine Teitler, Director of Content, MISTI. “MISTI made some big changes to our programming—including the addition of a CTF, hands-on Tech Labs during the main conference, and ratcheting up the technical levels of the workshops—so that attendees truly had the opportunity to balance the strategic aspects of the job with technical skills building. The feedback from attendees has been overwhelmingly positive, so we strive to improve on our agenda even further for 2019.”

InfoSec World is the annual flagship conference presented by MISTI dedicated to the business of information security. Next year's InfoSec World Conference and Expo is scheduled for April 1-3, 2019 at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, Lake Buena Vista, Florida. We look forward to seeing you there!

InfoSec World 2018 Makes Security Fun with Addition of Two New Events

Infosec-related Escape Rooms and a Capture The Flag will pit teams of security experts against each other to see who has the skills to win!

SOUTHBOUROUGH, Mass., February 21, 2018 – InfoSec World 2018 Conference and Expo, scheduled for March 19-21 at Disney's Contemporary Resort, Lake Buena Vista, Florida, just got a whole lot more exciting! In addition to presenting attendees with innumerable opportunities to learn and share valuable cybersecurity knowledge, this year’s event also provides the chance to show off their security prowess via two interactive networking events—Living Security Escape Rooms and the Pros Vs. Joes Capture the Flag (CTF).

“Security conferences are vital for professionals to learn new things, share ideas and network,” said Katherine Teitler, Director of Content, MISTI. “However, given the seriousness of the issues being discussed, it’s important that attendees also have a break for some light-hearted yet educational fun.”

One of the longest running annual conferences dedicated to the business of information security, InfoSec World is hosted by the MIS Training Institute (MISTI) - the international leader in information security, audit and IT audit training.

Living Security Escape Rooms

An escape room is an interactive game where groups of people are locked in a room and have to solve puzzles and find clues to escape, all within a set time period. At InfoSec World 2018, Living Security will set-up twelve escape rooms from March 19-21. The escape rooms have puzzles related to security concepts that cybersecurity professionals engage with in real life.

The escape rooms run with a maximum of eight participants and a minimum of four. Participants have the choice of forming teams with co-workers or friends or signing-up individually to meet new people and network. Registered attendees will have the opportunity to sign up ahead of time or onsite with their team.

Pros Vs. Joes Capture the Flag

On March 20, between 12:00 – 5:00 PM ET, InfoSec World’s first-ever CTF will pit individuals and teams of security experts against each other to attack and penetrate servers, workstations, and networking devices. As part of the challenge they will attack a “real” corporate network - from mail servers, web servers, all the way to a VOIP phone system! It is real pentesting, with points, scoring and real people defending the systems.

As individuals or in teams of up to four participants, anyone who knows how to turn on a computer can participate. Experts will be on hand to guide participants in case they need help working through the challenge. However, for those wanting to tackle the challenge on their own, experience with reconnaissance, footprinting, attacking, exploiting as well as post-exploitation will be helpful to complete the CTF.

Participants’ progress will be tracked live on a big screen on the Expo floor. Individual and team prizes will be awarded at the Tech Solutions Theatre at the conclusion of the challenge. To register for the competition as a remote participant click here.

Other fun activities scattered throughout the conference program include a Beer Crawl, an opening party to welcome attendees and Rise ‘n Shine Breakfasts. A professional photographer will also be onsite on Tuesday to take headshots of anyone wanting to update their professional LinkedIn profile.

“Are We There Yet?” - Getting There Is Only Half the Trip
By Amélie E. Koran, Deputy CIO, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the Inspector General
We are now in the midst of the next wave of information security, with a more diverse and dispersed talent pool, varying and more advanced threats and millions of potential attack surfaces multiplying by the hour. Are we in good hands, or do we need to hand over the driver’s seat to somebody else? This talk takes a high-level view of information security practices thus far – addressing the good and the bad, where those practices have led us and what we, as a security community, need to do as we move forward.

Are We Over-Investing or Under-Investing in Cybersecurity Year Over Year? How do We Know?
By Devon Bryan, Executive Vice President and CISO for the Federal Reserve System
In what ways can we provide defensible and quantitative responses to calculate ROI and justify the cybersecurity budget to the Board of Directors? Furthermore, how do we assure the organization’s leadership, including the CFO, that the security organization is rightly prioritizing cybersecurity financial investments against the organization’s riskiest items? This keynote address explores contemporary approaches to defensible cybersecurity budget and investment priorities, based on risk quantification techniques.

Integration of the Electronic Storage Detection K-9
By Ian Polhemus (Detective K9 Handler, City of Seattle), Todd Jordan (K9 Electronic Detection Expert), Bear (Labrador Retriever, Electronic Detection K9, Cybercrime Fighter)
Though cyber investigators can track down more digital information than most criminals think, retrieval of data from external sources—hard drives, USBs, and detachable storage—can provide additional evidence and speed up processes that might otherwise take weeks or months to uncover. But did you know that electronic storage devices can be detected by scent?

This keynote address introduces attendees to the newest technology component in K-9 investigations. It provides an overview of the Electronic Storage Detection (ESD) K-9 program, including the law enforcement and civilian applications in use today. Attendees will also see a live demonstration from one of these exceptional K9 - “Bear” who became famous after finding key digital evidence in the Jared Fogle child pornography case.

Getting to “Reasonable” and Learning to Love “Grey”
By Whitney Merrill, Privacy, eCommerce and Consumer Protection Counsel, Electronic Arts (EA)
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the leading privacy and data security law enforcement authority, requires companies to implement “reasonable security” to protect personal information. But what does “reasonable” mean? Does PCI or SOC 2 compliance suffice? If you look at the term “reasonable security” and cringe, asking yourself, “well…where’s the checkbox of things I need to have to have reasonable security,” you’re doing security wrong.

This talk discusses the long history of “reasonableness” in law, why reasonableness should be embraced and how to approach creating a reasonableness-based data security program.

Preparing Security Professionals for the Next Wave of Cyber Threats:
InfoSec World 2018 introduces Tech Labs and Tech Challenges, which offer information security professionals opportunities to gain firsthand experience and learn from seasoned professionals in real-life security scenarios.

Tech Labs
These 2-3 hour sessions are hands-on, guided learning for participants. Students learn new skills by working through real-life red and blue team simulations. An expert mentor guides them through written instructions to complete the full exercise.

Capture the Flag Tech Challenges
In teams of up to four people, InfoSec World attendees, sponsors, and students are invited to participate in a prepared Capture the Flag challenge taking place among all the action in the Expo! Teams will have to combine their knowledge and skills sets to compete together and complete the challenge. Each team’s real-time progress will be projected on a big screen, so bring your A-game!

The listed features only represent some of the highlights of the highly interactive and topical program. For more information on the conference, its detailed agenda as well as logistics, please visit: https://infosecworld.misti.com.
