MIS Training Institute Wraps-Up the Most Successful InfoSec World Conference Thus Far

With More Than 900 Attendees, 115 speakers and 71 sessions InfoSec World 2018 offered learning, networking and fun!

SOUTHBOUROUGH, Mass., April 12, 2018 – InfoSec World 2018 Conference and Expo, hosted by the MIS Training institute (MISTI) was the biggest and the most successful event since it first started over 20 years ago. As the longest running conference dedicated to the business of information security, InfoSec World 2018 attracted over 900 attendees, 115 expert speakers and more than 80 sponsors and exhibitors. The main conference ran from March 19-21 at Disney's Contemporary Resort, Lake Buena Vista, Florida. The event also included several hands-on pre- and post- conference workshops and focused summits.

Among the sessions presented at InfoSec World 2018, there were a few that really stood out the most to the crowd. Heavily attended sessions include:

• No File Required: The Emergence of the Fileless Attacks: The session was presented Giovanni Vigna, University of California Santa Barbara, and addressed the rise in fileless malware outbreaks and posed questions such as: What if there is no Flash file on the wire? What if the Shellcode does not load additional malware?
• What and Where is the “Dark Web,” Anyway?: This was the most highly anticipated session of InfoSec World 2018. Presented by Rachael Lucas and Connie Mastovich of Reclamere, attendees got a tour of the dark web, complete with a demonstration of how anonymity is assured for those using it.
• The New Era of Cyber-Threats: The Shift to Self-Learning, Self-Defending Networks: With the number of cyber threats organizations must face on a daily (even hourly) basis, it’s no wonder that this talk, presented by Cameron Armstrong-Peeler of Darktrace, was jam-packed. Armstrong-Peeler discussed how and why legacy rules- and signature-based tools are inadequate in today’s environments, how IoT stretches even today’s ever-shifting endpoints, and how security teams struggle to keep up with fast-moving threats.

Other session topics included the evolution of phishing, attack patterns in the enterprise, headline-grabbing compromises, among several others. Whether attendees were new to the infosec community or veterans with more than 20 years of experience, there were sessions to meet everyone’s needs.

“This was my first time attending InfoSec World, and I wasn’t sure what to expect,” said one of the attendees - Matt Michalek who is an Information Security Manager at Accertify. “I was very happy with both the variety of content and the great location. InfoSec World 2018 provided sessions that were relevant to information security and forensics, but also unusual to the normal conferences like this.”

Among the various presentations was a plethora of networking opportunities. Attendees participated in Living Security Escape Rooms, a Beer Crawl, and the Rise ‘n Shine Breakfasts to connect with like-minded peers and had fun while doing so. New this year, InfoSec World also hosted the Pros Vs. Joes Capture the Flag which saw participation from first-timers to hacking experts. The new addition allowed infosec professionals from across the nation to work as teams and compete.

Infosec-related Escape Rooms and a Capture The Flag will pit teams of security experts against each other to see who has the skills to win!

SOUTHBOUROUGH, Mass., February 21, 2018 – InfoSec World 2018 Conference and Expo, scheduled for March 19-21 at Disney's Contemporary Resort, Lake Buena Vista, Florida, just got a whole lot more exciting! In addition to presenting attendees with innumerable opportunities to learn and share valuable cybersecurity knowledge, this year’s event also provides the chance to show off their security prowess via two interactive networking events—Living Security Escape Rooms and the Pros Vs. Joes Capture the Flag (CTF).

“Security conferences are vital for professionals to learn new things, share ideas and network,” said Katherine Teitler, Director of Content, MISTI. “However, given the seriousness of the issues being discussed, it’s important that attendees also have a break for some light-hearted yet educational fun.”

Living Security Escape Rooms

An escape room is an interactive game where groups of people are locked in a room and have to solve puzzles and find clues to escape, all within a set time period. At InfoSec World 2018, Living Security will set-up twelve escape rooms from March 19-21. The escape rooms have puzzles related to security concepts that cybersecurity professionals engage with in real life.

The escape rooms run with a maximum of eight participants and a minimum of four. Participants have the choice of forming teams with co-workers or friends or signing-up individually to meet new people and network. Registered attendees will have the opportunity to sign up ahead of time or onsite with their team.

Pros Vs. Joes Capture the Flag

On March 20, between 12:00 – 5:00 PM ET, InfoSec World’s first-ever CTF will pit individuals and teams of security experts against each other to attack and penetrate servers, workstations, and networking devices. As part of the challenge they will attack a “real” corporate network - from mail servers, web servers, all the way to a VOIP phone system! It is real pentesting, with points, scoring and real people defending the systems.

As individuals or in teams of up to four participants, anyone who knows how to turn on a computer can participate. Experts will be on hand to guide participants in case they need help working through the challenge. However, for those wanting to tackle the challenge on their own, experience with reconnaissance, footprinting, attacking, exploiting as well as post-exploitation will be helpful to complete the CTF.

Participants’ progress will be tracked live on a big screen on the Expo floor. Individual and team prizes will be awarded at the Tech Solutions Theatre at the conclusion of the challenge. To register for the competition as a remote participant click here.
